My Version of an Amazing and Healthy Hot Chocolate! (Vegan, Dairy Free)

Traditional hot chocolate is typically filled with dairy, processed white sugar and other artificial preservatives and additives. Whilst delicious and nostalgic, I have always wanted to create my own healthy version with more wholesome ingredients that can be enjoyed even if you’re vegan or dairy free! I am so excited to be sharing with you my homemade, 5-ingredient healthy hot chocolate that is made with almond milk and naturally sweetened with only pure maple syrup.

Although it took me a few times to perfect the recipe, I truly believe that this is the best vegan and dairy-free hot chocolate. It’s creamy, perfectly sweet, with just the right amount of chocolate to keep it intense and rich-tasting.

INGREDIENTS:

You only need a few ingredients to make this healthy hot chocolate recipe:

  • Raw cacao/cocoa powder – The most pure form of chocolate, cacao is packed with antioxidants, fiber, and magnesium. Not only does it make the recipe rich and chocolatey, it is also good for you! Otherwise, you can also try a high-quality unsweetened cocoa powder. I highly recommend using Ghirardelli’s 100% Cocoa. I think it has the best flavor for hot chocolate (and trust me, I’ve tried quite a few!)
  • Maca powder – The malty flavour of maca adds depth to this hot chocolate. It is full of fibre, vitamins, and minerals; has health benefits such as reducing blood pressure and improving memory.
  • Almond milk – I use almond milk because it’s what I always have in the fridge, but feel free to substitute any type of milk you like. Cow’s milk, coconut milk, or oat milk are some good options too and would also work here. I also like to use a combination of unsweetened almond milk and light coconut milk to keep it dairy free yet ultra creamy. The coconut milk adds a slight sweetness and amazing flavor. I recommend using light coconut milk from the can.
  • Maple syrup – It sweetens this healthy hot chocolate naturally. Plus, I love the maple flavor with the malty maca and rich cacao. I love how delicious the maple syrup tastes in this recipe, plus it’s a natural sweetener. Otherwise, can always use honey or a sprinkle or pure monk fruit sweetener.
  • Cinnamon – I love cinnamon so this is a must-have for me. It adds a warm depth of flavour. If you like your hot chocolate with a bit of a spicy kick, try adding a pinch of cayenne as well.
  • Nut butter  – For richness and healthy fats! Don’t worry – this is still far lighter than hot chocolate made with whole milk and/or heavy cream. For a nut free option, try coconut oil.
  • And a little bit of salt – Don’t skip it! This is what makes the magic happen!
  • Vanilla extract (optional): a splash of vanilla brings lovely flavor to the hot chocolate. Not completely necessary so that's why it's optional.

INSTRUCTIONS:
[1] In a blender, mix the almond milk, cacao powder, maca, maple syrup, nut butter, cinnamon and salt. (You can also whisk this together by hand).
[2] Transfer to a small saucepan and warm over medium heat. Taste and adjust the sweetness if desired. You’ll know it’s right when you can’t stop tasting spoonful after spoonful. If it's too thick, add a little more almond milk. (Do not let the hot chocolate boil or you risk burning the almond milk which may change the overall taste).
[3] Pour into a mug and serve with shaved dark chocolate (optional). Enjoy!
