Sipping lemon water is one of the simplest ways to boost our health and it is no doubt one of the favourite wellness practices within my daily morning routine. Not only is it refreshing and incredibly good for you, it is also easy and inexpensve to make. Besides rehydrating your body after a good night's sleep, it also gets your digestion going which is a great thing to do right when you wake up. Starting your day off hydrated with your digestive enzymes ready to go is a great way to improve your health.
In addition to re-hydrating your body first thing in the morning, here are some other health benefits of drinking lemon water:
1. Lemon Water balances the pH in your body.
Although lemons are very acidic on their own, they have a very alkalizing effect on the body. What does that mean and why is it important? In simple terms, cancerous ccells cannot grow in an alkaline environment therefore keeping your body slightly alkaline is extremely important to your overall health. This means limiting acid-forming foods such as dairy, animal proteins and high amount of processed sugar.
2. Lemon Water improves your immunity.
The high amounts of Vitamin C, potassium and folate will boost your immune system and keep your body healthy, keeping you away from colds and viruses. Both the natural phytonutrients and gut-healing properties of this drink will give your immune system an extra boost. Lemons are also high in lutein and zeaxanthin to keep your eyes healthy.
3. Lemon Water is a Natural Diuretic.
This is one of the key reasons to start your day with a large cup of warm lemon water, to help detox your body and starting your day off right.
4. Lemon Water aids digestion.
Sipping warm lemon water 10-15 minutes before you eat will help increase enzyme production in your gut and aid in digestion. Even better, it also helps your digestive system to function properly, which can have gut-healing effects over the long term.
5. Lemon Water enhances your body's natural detoxification process.
Because it boosts the body’s natural digestion and detoxification processes, many people find that a glass of lemon water each morning also aids in supporting weight loss and skin health.
Lemon water is honestly the simplest thing to make.
Squeeze half a lemon into a full glass of warm water (not boiling) & enjoy first thing each morning. Boiling water will kill the nutrients in the lemon so warm or room temperature water is best.
Optional if desired: add a dash of organic cayenne pepper to boost your metabolism and further increase your digestive enzyme production.
No Lemon? No Problem! You can use a lime instead. Limes are also loaded with very similar properties to lemons, plus they taste great. Making your warm water with lime juice occasionally is a great way to mix things up.
Tips:
Always use a fresh lemon, never use bottled lemon juice. Organic lemons are best if you have access to them. Trust me, if bottled lemon juice worked the same I’d say go for it! It just doesn’t. Bottled lemon juice has been pasteurized (heated to a high temperature) which kills most of the enzymes and nutrients. It’s also usually simply a mixture of water and citric acid with a little lemon flavor or very little lemon juice. If you want the natural healing benefits of this drink, you need to use a real lemon.
Always wash your lemon well before cutting into it. They’ve been a lot of places (and touched by a lot of hands!) before making their way to you, and their grooved peel is particularly good at carrying wax, agricultural chemicals, and germs. Use a produce wash like Veggie Wash, or soak your lemons for 15 minutes in a large bowl of water with 1 teaspoon of baking soda. Scrub the peel with a brush, rinse and dry, and you’re ready for juicing!
You can always use a lime if you don't have a lemon on hand. Gently squeeze the lemon by hand or use a lemon juicer (which does wonder in helping get more juice from your lemon and keeping those seeds out!).
A small note of caution: since lemon water is acidic, be mindful of your tooth enamel. Every morning or once a day is great. If you drink it more often, you may want to rinse your mouth with plain water or brush your teeth to ensure the lemon juice isn’t just sitting on your teeth all day.
